Carbon fiber composite materials work with cold air in front of the engine. But CMCs, originally developed for the massive gas turbines of power plants, operate in the hot section of the engine at temperatures that soften even metals. The extra heat produced by the ceramic gives the engine more power to work and increases its efficiency.
CMCs are also twice as strong and only one-third lighter than their metal counterparts. This allows designers to make thinner and lighter parts, further reducing engine weight. “I thought it would be the holy grail if we could make it work,” says Krishnan Luthra, a researcher who has spent two decades developing the material.
